Today is World Soil Day

Today is World Soil Day. Without this thin, living layer of soil – this reusable natural resource – life as we know it fails. Soils are 3D profiles. Every layer and attribute matters.

LandScan has developed and provides services to install our #digitaltwin technology on two continents. A key component is our #digitalsoilcore (DSC), which generates a digital soil profile to over a meter deep in ~60 seconds.

We now have 5M+ high-resolution in-situ soil imagery profiles plus spectroscopy and other sensors to scan:
• bulk density
• texture
• carbon
• structure
• water-holding capacity
• salinity
• nutrients
• pH
• …and more

This enables the creation of true 3D digital soil data and statistically robust maps to optimize the placement and timing of costly inputs like water, nutrients, and amendments—improving soil health and productivity.

It’s also essential for generating objective, calibrated, repeatable, and transferable data for baselining, monitoring, modeling, and dynamic decision support. When combined with analytical-quality remote sensing, it finally becomes possible and practical to analyze crop performance with AI. We do this through our online interactive simulator, #rootcauseanalytics (RCA).

But how do you get the most value from a digital twin? By combining it with world-class expertise. We’re honored to be working with John Rasic, a global soil expert who has examined and classified thousands of soil profiles worldwide to help customers make critical decisions. Together, we’re using the digital twin to target “representative profiles” for soil pit descriptions and link the DSC digital signatures with his knowledge and experience.

We also enable access to the digital twin from anywhere in the world to “train” the in-situ soil imagery and sensor data and provide decision support to the customer—whether that’s a grower, soil surveyor, irrigation designer, road builder, turf manager, archaeologist, levee inspector… or one day, a lunar explorer.

This creates a revolutionary opportunity to use the DSC as a prospecting and surveying tool: go anywhere, instantly quantify the potential (or limits) of a soil by scanning the digital profile and connecting it to a growing classification database.
